my journalism career has led me to the world of documentaries as an educator, a reviewer and a filmmaker.
Founding director,
jonathan b. murray center for documentary journalism
When the Missouri School of Journalism decided to create a world-class documentary film program that would be uniquely focused on teaching both undergraduate and graduate students by having them learn while actually making films, the school chose me to lead the program. I was honored to be able to create the curriculum, equip the labs, develop outreach and teach four courses in documentary filmmaking.
film screener,
various film festivals
I have contributed by time to the True/False Film Fest, the St. Louis International Film Festival and numerous student film festivals as a film screener. In that position, I watch and review submitted films, giving programmers valuable information from which to decide which films to consider for the festival.
I have held leadership roles for the Kansas City Film Fest International, including serving as president of the board of directors and leading the organization for multiple film festivals. In addition, I have been a volunteer for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Palm Springs Shortsfest, the True/False Film Fest and the St. Louis International Film Festival.

co-director,
Keep the Cameras Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way
To borrow the slogan of MTV’s The Real World, this is the true story—-the true story of a pandemic; politics; misunderstanding and prejudice; the impact of the media; and, most importantly, AIDS activist Pedro Zamora, his life, his joy, and his influence, as told by people who knew and loved him, and by those who witnessed the strength of his commitment and its impact. Pedro refused to give in to the disease he knew would kill him, demanding throughout his decline and hospitalization that MTV “keep the cameras rolling.” While he died on November 11, 1994 at the young age of 22, his insistence on his way with bravery, humanity, and love truly changed the world. ...this is the true story—the true story of AIDS activist Pedro Zamora’s way.
